WHAT TO EXPECT FROM AN EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT

As an Educational Consultant, I would define my job as one of helping parents find an appropriate program/school for their at-risk child who may be experiencing difficulties academically, behaviorally and/or emotionally. You have probably exhausted all of your local resources such as psychiatrists, psychologists, rehabilitation centers and hospitals and don’t know what the next step will be. The brief amount of time spent at these places is scarcely enough time to effect long-term change. There are several hundred schools/programs specializing in specific areas of a child's needs. Finding the "right fit" is crucial for your child's future and overall success. I am here to guide you through the process of finding the appropriate placement for your child.

I travel approximately 50 days per year, visiting programs and attending various professional conferences and conferring with other colleagues. This helps me make the best possible recommendations to you, for your child. I will not tell you whether to place your child, or when to place your child. These are parental decisions. However, I am dedicated to giving you the best possible advise about what your options are. I encourage you to call current alumni/parents about a program/school as you will get first hand information. If you are currently seeing a professional, whether it be a physician or therapist, who knows you child’s history, I would encourage you to share my suggestions with him/her. Your parental knowledge of your child that no one else could possibly know, coupled with an objective professional opinion, should help you make your final decision.

If your child has become involved with the courts, you need to continue to follow the advice of your probation officer and your attorney. Withholding information which would help me understand the situation could lead to less than satisfying results. It is often difficult for parents to admit what problems may exist at home, but it is essential to the consultant in helping you know which direction to go. If you are considering applying for placement or any kind of reimbursement through your public school system, you need to work with an attorney who specializes in child advocacy, and I do not accept cases in this category. Your public school will help you select a placement. I will also not accept cases where there is a risk of court involvement around divorce and custodial issues, or one parent acting without the consent of the other.
